A brilliant is a polished diamond. Diamond is the hardest known mineral of natural origin, which makes it an excellent abrasive. To obtain polished diamonds, it is only possible to process them under high pressure and high temperature with other diamonds (known as Type-II diamonds) that are harder, or with substances that are harder than the diamond itself. These substances can be borazone, ultrahard fullerite or diamond nanorods. This also means that the diamond perfectly retains its surface polish – its brilliant shine. Diamond has a melting point of 3547 °C, the highest of all minerals.
