Rutilated quartz is a type of quartz that contains inclusions of rutile. These inclusions mostly look golden, but they can also appear silvery, copper red, or dark black.  Rutilated quartz is prized for the quality and beauty of these inclusions.
 
Quartz is one of the most widely distributed minerals. It belongs to most rocks - both igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. Quartz is resistant to weathering (breakdown of rocks), so sand is mostly composed of quartz grains because the other less resistant minerals have been broken down.
In Latvia, quartz is very often found as a component of rocks brought by glaciers. A careful and patient searcher can also find tiny quartz crystals formed in small voids in the granite.
